Add A Battery To My Solar
Last updated
You can add a battery to an existing system. How easy and how costly it is depends mostly on your current inverter.
There are two common designs. An AC-coupled battery is usually the simpler and cheaper retrofit. It is a little less efficient because power is converted more than once. A DC-coupled battery shares one inverter with your panels, which is more efficient but usually means replacing your existing inverter with a hybrid model (EnergySage on adding a battery to existing solar).
That makes timing matter. If your inverter is already five or more years old, EnergySage suggests a DC-coupled retrofit may make more sense, since you may replace it soon anyway.
Before you get quotes, gather your inverter make and model, your monthly usage, and what you want the battery to do, such as outage backup or shifting power use. Ask each company who handles the permit and the utility paperwork. Confirm any new work will not put your current warranties at risk.
